You know it’s race season with all of the awesome races we are talking about and one lesser known, but equally awesome, race is set to take place June 15th – 17th, 2012. This race is appropriately dubbed the Pageant of Power, as it boasts some of the world’s fastest supercars all battling for the fastest lap time on a 1.2-mile-long track.
This race is headlined by a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport featuring a 258 mpg top speed, one of now 76 remaining Aston Martin One-77s following the horrific death of one earlier in the week, and a Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. We venture to say that with the Bugatti is in this year’s running and the 62.68-second lap time record set by Nikki Faulkner in 2010 is in jeopardy, but we will have to wait and see.
The event is expected to pull in a total of 75,000 fans and with tickets starting at just £26 ($39) for a single-day pass and ranging up to £85 ($127.50) for a full 3-day pass with access to the fireworks display and the Mossley Brass Band show, there is no wonder it draws such a high number of fans. $127.50 for three days of supercars tearing up a track and a well-produced fireworks display to follow sounds like a sweet deal to us!
In addition to the supercars, there is a class dedicated only to AC Cobras with the same purpose of completing the 1.2-mile track in the shortest amount of time. There is also a series of Autograss races run throughout the weekend, which occur on a 400-meter-long oval soil track plus there is an ultra-technical Supermoto class, which is a mixture of motocross and road racing.
Needless to say, there is plenty of piston-thumping excitement throughout the entire weekend to keep any motorhead interested.

Aston Martin

It is well known among the automotive world that the Aston Martin Rapide has always been the black sheep of the luxury sports sedan market. Its 470-horsepower, 5.9-liter V-12 engine has always fallen short of the competition, like the 518-pony Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG and 500-horsepower Panamera Turbo. To make matters worse, it starts off at over $110,000 more than the Mercedes and over $70,000 more than the Porsche.
This all points to a big reason for Aston Martin refreshing the Rapide for 2013. Granted, the base price will not change, but its performance will. Initially, we all expected to see an available a higher-performance Rapide S in 2013. According to reports, however, a Rapide S is not in the works.
Car and Driver is reporting that Aston Martin is fitting the 5.9-liter V-12 plant from the 2013 Vanquish, which produces 565 horsepower, into the slightly redesigned Rapide. The exact horsepower figures are not compete for the Rapide, but we expect it to be slightly de-tuned to not compete with the Vanquish.
You can look for the 2013 Aston Martin Rapide to punch out somewhere in the 545-horsepower range to give it a bump over its cheaper competitors. Is this really enough to push the Aston in front of the competition? We say no, but it should help level out the market slightly.
With the additional horsepower in the base Rapide, there is no need for a Rapide S model, per Car and Driver, so don’t look for one this year. Apparently, all of the style changes we have seen from the spy shots and renderings are all included on the base model, if the reports are accurate.
It’s nice to see Aston Martin thinking about ways to make its extremely expensive sedan a little more worth the extra money, but would you still pay over $100K more for the Aston over the Mercedes?

Completing the DBS line-up, the new Volante affords customers the combination of the DBS's already-established sports car characteristics with all the thrills associated with a drop-top. The DBS Volante sits atop Aston Martin's convertible lineup, which also includes the mechanically identical DBS Volante and Virage Volante models.
To ensure a top-speed beyond 190 mph, the same 6.0-liter 12-cylinder engine found in the DBS coupe also powers the convertible. With 510 horsepower and a 420 lb-ft. of torque, the DBS Volante will accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph in just a 4.3 seconds.
The DBS Volante comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, and has an optional Touchtronic six-speed automatic transmission.
Like the DBS coupe, the DBS Volante uses carbon fiber to form the hood, trunk and front fenders -- resulting in increased performance through weight reduction. The top drops in just 14 seconds at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. It stows beneath an automatic, hard tonneau.
The DBS Volante does come with a pair of small rear seats, but even the automaker admits that they're best left for children or luggage.
This high-performance luxury convertible features an Adaptive Damping System (ADS, which is specifically tuned for the DBS Volante and helps to maximize ride comfort. It uses two separate valves to set the dampers to five different positions, allowing instant adjustment of the car's ride and handling characteristics. The ADS automatically alters the suspension settings to ensure the driver has high levels of control at all times, with the ability to respond instantly to different driving conditions. The dampers can be set to 'soft,' with a corresponding improvement in ride quality, or 'firm,' providing improved body control for more spirited driving.
Standard equipment includes Bang & Olufsen's BeoSound DBS audio system, consisting of 13 individual speakers and Bang & Olufsen's unique Digital Signal Processing system. The DSP system transforms the DBS Volante into an acoustically sophisticated venue, capable of sensing when the roof is up or retracted and adjusts the sound stage to compensate for wind noise and change in acoustics.
The rest of the in-car entertainment includes an I-pod connector, USB connection, a HDD satellite navigation system.

The DBS is equipped with 5935 cc V12 engine with four valves per cylinder. The same engine is also used in the DBR9 and DBRS9 racing cars albeit with extensive modifications. The engine of the DBS produces 510 horsepower (380 kW) at 6500 rpm and 570 N·m (420 lb·ft) of torque @ 5750 rpm with a compression ratio of 10.9:1. The engine also includes an active bypass valve which above 5500 rpm opens and lets more air into the engine resulting in increased performance and propels the car from 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 191 mph (307 km/h) and 183 mph (295 km/h) with TOUCHTRONIC 2’ transmission. In 2007, the British motoring show Top Gear sent the DBS around their famous test track and recorded a lap time of 1:23.9; 3.2 seconds faster than its predecessor the Vanquish S, and a second faster than the comparable.
